I wonder what his position is on polar bear embryos.

I suppose there are more immediate things to consider these days as Obama continues his ruination of our capitalist economy. But let’s take a second to reflect Obama’s decision to funnel public money to experimentation on living human embryos.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – President Barack Obama, who opposes limits on federal funding of stem cell research, will sign an executive order about stem cells on Monday, an administration official said on Friday.

The official could not confirm the details of what Obama would sign, but advisers had previously said he favored lifting the eight-year limitation on funding of human embryonic stem cell research imposed by his predecessor, President George W. Bush.

The issue is controversial because some people believe the destruction of any human embryo is wrong.

And why might some people think that destroying (notice they don’t say “killing”, which would imply that the embryo possesses a “life” capable of being “killed”) a human embryo is wrong?

Reuters doesn’t say.

What do you think?

  1. I think embryonic stem cell research is important and should go forward. I think there can be great strides to be made in the study of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and who knows what other disease they can aim to cure. I think we need to be pragmatic about what’s actually happening with these embryos…its not like they are on their way to becoming babies anytime soon. They would be destroyed anyway. If they can be used for science, then that’s a good thing and its something the government should be funding.

  2. Won’t argue whether it has beneficial results, only whether a thing is worth doing so long as it has beneficial results. Do you approve of experimenting on living animals if the results are beneficial? What about young adult humans? Child humans? Baby humans? 7 month old babies in the womb?

Is there a point for you where a thing is not worth doing no matter the beneficial results?

If so, what point is that?

  3. Scientists already perform experiments on adult humans and living animals. Using embryonic stem cells is NOT the same as using a “young adult humans; child humans; baby humans or babies in the womb”. We are not talking about “mad scientists” or bizzare experiments performed by psychotic Nazi doctors. These embryos that will be destroyed, so if they can instead be put to good use for the benefit of society as a whole, Ithink that is a good thing.

  4. Scientists perform experiments on adult humans? Is that with our without consent? Is the subject’s death a required outcome?

As for living animal experimentation, do you think that this is a good thing?

Why is using a human embryo not the same thing as using an unborn human or a born human child or a born human adult? Don’t all of those things have “humanity” as a common denominator?

Even if the experiments are not bizarre…even if they save lives (still debatable, by the way, with regard to embryo experimentation)…is it OK to use any living human to reach that end? Or just the ones that are only very small like an embryo. What about the ones that are 6 weeks old? 6 years? The elderly?

You keep coming back to the fact that these embryos will be “destroyed”…but our own deaths are all inevitable…does that mean we’re all pre-cleared to be experimented upon? My grandmother is 94 and will be dead soon…so is it OK to experiment on her?

Just trying to wrap my mind around your philosophy here….:)
